‘After Earth’ Release Date Moves Up
For those interested in checking out M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith‘s multi-million-dollar sci-fi epic After Earth, your wait just got a little shorter.
Sony is moving After Earth up to May 31 from its original release date of June 7. In the original slot, After Earth would have opened against the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship, and been only a week ahead of the release of Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot, Man of Steel, and apocalyptic comedy This Is the End.
Now, the sci-fi film – about a father and son who crash-land on an inhospitable Earth 1000 years after mankind abandoned the planet – will open against two thrillers, Lionsgate’s Now You See Me and Universal’s The Purge. It will also be coming out only a week after the crowded May 24, when The Hangover Part III, Fast & Furious 7 and Epic all debut.
Putting a little space between After Earth and Man of Steel may just work in the former film’s favor, as Superman would be sure to erode Will Smith’s box office take. You can check out our preview of After Earth – which we prematurely pit against Oblivion, opening today – here.
